Northwest Indian Style Button Blanket

A bold graphic Northwest Indian Style Button Blanket depicting a bear holding a mask or some sort of creature. The bear was revered by the Tlingit tribe because Indian folklore credited the bear with teaching the Indians how to catch salmon. Executed on what appears to be an old army blanket, it is decorated with pearlescent buttons and red felt appliqués. This is one of several found stored in a trunk in an attic a few years ago. Definitely one of a kind, this unique style of Tlingit Button Blanket originated on the Northwest coast and Alaska in the early 19th century with the introduction of European materials brought in with traders and explorers from the continent. This one is a later creation—based on the buttons, felt and blanket, it probably dates to more mid-century. Given its age, it is in an excellent state of preservation with little, if any, moth damage. The maker is unknown but it came from a collection of Indian artifacts, so these blankets may have been acquired many years ago. In any case, it is a remarkable piece of artistry, stunning on a bed or displayed hanging on a wall.
