Vintage Design
Made in the midst of the Victorian Aesthetic Movement, the chair has low proportions and is stamped on each back leg with an ornate letter P or T (pictured), in the design manner of Bruce James Talbert for Gillows & Co.
The chair boasts a carved and ebonised frame, upholstered seat and arms, which are solid and in good condition, and stands on turned front legs, set on casters. The fabric is great condition, other than a small hole on one arm (pictured).
“The Aesthetic Movement in Britain (1860 – 1900) aimed to escape the ugliness and materialism of the Industrial Age, by focusing instead on producing art that was beautiful rather than having a deeper meaning – ‘Art for Art’s sake’.” (source: V&A).
