Vintage Design
Pair of Italian armchairs designed by Vico Magistretti, 1970s. In 1976, Vico Magistretti designed the Safran chair for Asko, a design highly inspired by Alvar Aalto’s laminated wood furniture. We see this style in this pair of armchairs, with a body and structure made of plywood or laminate, with a curved shape on the armrests. Seats and backrests upholstered in a typical textile of the time, with a handle on the back of the seat, a detail very typical of the Safran series.
Very much in the style of Giuseppe Pagano’s laminated wood furniture, like his “Bocconi” armchair from the 1930s.
This pair of seats have been reinforced in the seat with a metal sheet screwed to the structure (see photos), and have been restored in a basic way, especially in the textile part, fixing some damage (see detail photos). Of the 16 original seatback screws, 4 were missing and were replaced. They need some general restoration.
